I come from a small town in Sheikhupura, Pakistan, a place where opportunities feel distant, and the dreams of studying abroad seem even further. But I have always believed that if you work hard enough and stay persistent, the impossible can become possible.

After graduating with a bachelor’s in civil engineering from NUST, Islamabad, with a CGPA of 3.40, I was not sure how I would fund my future studies. It seemed like an enormous barrier at the time. But then I was awarded the Aalto University Tuition Fee Scholarship, which waived the €15,000/year fee. That was a moment I will never forget—it was not just financial support; it was a door to endless opportunities in Finland, the happiest country in the world and home to the best education system.

During my bachelor’s, I specialized in structural engineering, and I always felt a deep connection with the structures around me—the way they stood strong, weathered storms, and served communities. The MSc in Building Technology at Aalto University aligned perfectly with my past research and allowed me to deepen my expertise in structural design and management. But more than that, Finland’s unique approach to sustainable building and innovation drew me in. It was not just about academics; it was about contributing to something bigger, something that could improve the way we build and live around the world.

The process for applying to universities in Finland is straightforward. Everything is centralized on one website (studyinfo.fi), making it easy to find the courses and universities that suit you. But the timeline is tight, you need to be prepared because the application window is short, starting on December 1st and closing by January 3rd.

I learned about Aalto from my fellow NUSTIANS who had been admitted the previous year. They were my guiding light, helping me through every step, from choosing the right program to compiling my documents.

For anyone applying to Finland, I want to emphasize the importance of document preparation. Documentation is relatively simple: just have your degree, transcript, and other educational records attested by the HEC and relevant boards. Unlike many other countries, Finland doesn’t require any MOFA attestation, which makes things easier. Of course, IELTS is mandatory, and a well-structured motivation letter and academic CV are essential. You have to send attested copies of your degree and transcript through courier within 15–20 days of receiving admission. So, I would d recommend having those attested copies ready in advance. Time moves quickly once you are accepted!

For those looking to apply to Finland, here is my advice: explore studyinfo.fi find the courses that resonate with you, and tailor your motivation letter to the program’s specific requirements. Make sure you complete your IELTS in time and keep your documents organized and ready to go.

But most importantly, believe in yourself. The journey will not be easy, there will be failures and rejections along the way. I faced my fair share of doubts and setbacks. But never give up. The hard work will pay off. Dreams can come true, no matter where you come from.
